Exciting News, New Products and Holiday Cheer December 11, 2016 20:03
It’s been a while since you’ve heard from me. Summer and fall came and went in the blink of an eye. I didn’t actually have a proper vacation this year, except for short trips visiting friends and family, but I can’t complain. It’s been a busy time, but busy doing things I love. Many of you know that I’ve been entertaining the idea of stepping into skin care for a while now. It was an obvious next step for me, since if you want to have flawless makeup, you need to start with a flawless complexion. My interest in developing my own skin care products started when I realized that it’s almost impossible to find an all-around natural product. How can this be when there are so many products out there saturating the market and claiming to have just the secret ingredient that will tone, tighten, even out your skin, or make your wrinkles go away? Once you start researching ingredients, you realize that many of them are just a marketing hype. Others have a long list of ingredients that you can’t even pronounce, created synthetically in a laboratory and tested on innocent animals. A few of them have indeed wonderful natural ingredients that have been known for centuries to benefit our skin and you can’t wait to put them on your skin, until you move towards the end of the ingredient list and realize they are preserved with parabens (preservatives derived from petroleum) or contain fragrance (which is really a cover-up word for tens or even hundreds of synthetic ingredients and chemicals). Parabens and fragrance are well-known to cause cancer and hormone disruptions. I get it, it’s not easy recognizing all those harmful ingredients, after all, an unsafe product wouldn’t be approved and made available for sale. You would be surprised! I bet more than 99% of your creams, shampoos, makeup and other personal care products contain parabens and/or fragrance. Take a look at them now and check their ingredients against this list: Toxic Ingredients in Cosmetics. Prepare to be shocked and make room in the garbage for them! They say “Ignorance is bliss”. I’m telling you: Knowledge is power. Take your health into your own hands, because no one else cares as much as you do!
In September, I actually took the first step in starting my skin care line and went back to school to study towards an Advanced Diploma in Organic Cosmetic Science with Formula Botanica, an award-winning Organic Cosmetic Science School based in UK. I am beyond excited with the wonderful things I’ve been learning and can’t wait to share my new-found knowledge with you!
Three new skin care products are ready just in time for the Holiday/dry-skin season. Meet the Fantastic 3!
The oils in this serum were specifically selected for their richness in anti-aging compounds such as essential fatty acids, antioxidants, flavonoids, polyphenols and vitamins. Easily absorbed into the skin, they will hydrate, nourish and help to refine mature, aging skin. The Sea Buckthorn berry oil gives this blend a lovely golden colour. It looks like liquid gold and this will undoubtedly be gold for your face.
A few facts about the stars of this serum:
Also known as Tea Seed Oil, this oil has been popular in Japan for thousands of years and is responsible for the peachy skin and long nails of Japanese women. It is high in monounsaturated oleic acid (80%), which gives it excellent skin-conditioning properties. This oil doesn’t clog pores or leave an oily feel, due to tannins present in the seeds. Able to rejuvenate and maintain moisture, its protective polyphenols, vitamins A, B, C and E and other antioxidants also protect the skin from UV and environmental exposure.
This rare oil softens and rejuvenates by promoting healthy new cell growth, nourishing dry and mature skin types. It contains punicic acid at 75%, a highly nutritious fatty acid for the skin, able to balance pH and condition the skin’s surface. This fatty acid is anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and cell regenerating, helping to increase elasticity of the skin and repair sun and weather damage. Other acids contained in this oil are gallic and ellagic acid. Gallic acid heals wounds and soothes burns, while ellagic acid protects and rebuilds collagen and provides added thickness to thin skin.
High in oleic acid (75%), with a smaller amount of linoleic acid (11%), hazelnut oil is able to penetrate the skin with proteins, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Its tannin content stimulates skin circulation and helps to reduce and shrink the size and visibility of thread veins. As one of the vegetable oils high in unsaturated fatty acids, it is good for moisturizing and softening.
Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil:
This oil has the ability to promote regeneration of skin cells and mucous membranes, heal wounds and ease pain. Its powerful orange colour is due to its high concentration in provitamin A carotenes and carotenoids, which protects against damaging UV exposure. Vitamin E tocopherols, vitamin C and flavonoids, vitamin B1, B2 and K, as well as essential fatty acids and phytosterols, make sea buckthorn an exceptionally nourishing ingredient in caring for the skin.
This blend is infused with precious, therapeutic grade essential oils such as Frankincense, Copaiba, Helichrysum, Clary Sage and Patchouli, specifically selected for their skin-toning and anti-aging properties. Due to their small molecules, essential oils can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, where they release powerful antioxidant, anti-bacterial and rejuvenating compounds. The smell is simply divine!
When was the last time you bought a cream specifically designed for your belly? And why in the world would you need a special cream when you can very well use a regular body cream? Well, if you are struggling with pre-menopausal symptoms like I am, you know this is the time when everything orbits around your belly (you know, like the rings of Saturn - not sure what emoticon is more appropriate here, a smiley face or a crying-out-loud one, so I'll let you pick one). I extensively researched carrier and essential oils and, in the process, I came across a Korean study that showed great results in participants. You can read a synopsis of the study here: Effect of Aromatherapy on Abdominal Fat.
That's how the Happy Belly Cream came to life. I want to be clear, I do not promote this as a weight-loss solution, but rather as the perfect cream to tone the skin on your belly, to help to alleviate pre- or post-menopausal symptoms, while promoting lymph drainage, increasing circulation, and supporting the liver and pancreas. Your skin will be nourished, supple and silky smooth, while the smell will uplift and brighten your spirit.
What's in it?
Aloe Vera Juice:
The incredible Aloe Vera needs no introduction. The ‘plant of immortality’, as it was called by Egyptians, can perform miracles for your skin. It contains two hormones: Auxin and Gibberellins, which provide wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties, reducing skin inflammation. Rich in antioxidants such as beta carotene, vitamin C and E, Aloe juice helps to improve the skin's natural firmness and texture.
With its high concentration of monounsaturated oleic acid (80%), Camellia oil has excellent skin-conditioning properties. Able to rejuvenate and maintain moisture in the skin, it is easily absorbed, leaving the skin silky smooth without the greasy feeling.
Apricot Kernel Oil:
This oil is excellent for mature skin due to its emollient, nourishing and revitalizing properties. A generous vitamin E content provides free radical protection from oxidation of cell membranes, while the phytosterol beta-sitosterol is anti-inflamatory, soothing irritation and supporting the protective barrier function of the skin.
Also called Palma Christi or "Hand of Christ", a reference to its healing abilities, this oil has been used for over 4,000 years. Edgar Cayce recommended castor oil often in his trance healing, successfully treating many people. Its increased ability to penetrate the skin allows it to carry nutrients into the body by external application. Castor oil packs placed on the liver and abdominal area are a common method of alternative treatment for increasing immune function and a number of conditions, including constipation, liver congestion and inflammation.
Citrus Essential Oils:
The Happy Belly Cream contains a blend of precious, therapeutic grade Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon, Tangerine and Bergamot essential oils.
I could talk about Citrus essential oils for hours, but don’t want to take too much of your time, so here’s a summary of their benefits:
- Skin benefits: have anti-aging properties, combat cellulite, decrease visibility of scars and stretch marks.
- Antioxidant: support the immune system to fight colds and flu virus, bronchitis and fevers.
- Digestive system: relieve diarrhea, constipation, and gas. Stimulate organs to work smoothly.
- Circulatory system: stimulate function of organs, help detox the body.
- Infections: they are antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and disinfectant.
- Sedative and calming: relax muscles, reduce stress and anxiety and promote peaceful, happy feelings.
Cypress Essential Oil:
Cypress essential oil has astringent, antiseptic and anti-infectious properties that offer comprehensive benefits for the body.
- Skin benefits: tightens the skin, reduces appearance of scars, helps in early healing of wounds.
- Menstrual problems: helps regulate excessive bleeding, alleviates menstrual pain, reduces the size of cysts in the ovaries.
- Detoxification: helps with drainage of lymphatic fluids and flushes out toxins, preventing occurrence of urinary infections due to its antiseptic properties. Increased urination also ensures that there is no water retention in the body.
- Digestive system: has antispasmodic properties, relieving intestinal, abdominal and muscular spasms and cramps.
- Sedative and calming: reduces anger, irritability and stress, induces sleep.
A word of warning: Do not use if pregnant or breast-feeding. Avoid applying to skin that will be exposed to sunlight or UV light within 24 hours. Citrus oils are photo-toxic, which means they make the skin more sensitive to sunlight and increase the risk of burning.
If you don’t use a toner, you are missing an important step in your skin care routine. For years, I’ve been skipping this step myself. You’ve probably read it too: you don’t actually need a toner, it’s just an unnecessary step and your skin can get everything it needs from lotions, creams, cleansers etc. In my quest to finding the secret to a younger looking skin though, I stumbled upon so many women with gorgeous, luminous skin, claiming their secret was the use of a toner. This intrigued me and pushed me to dig deeper and find out more.
In my next blog post I will share with you my findings and why I decided that using a toner is an essential step for beautiful skin. Until then, here’s a summary of the benefits a toner can have for your skin: it balances your skin’s pH, shrinks pores, moisturizes, helps with breakouts and blemishes, removes traces of dirt and makeup and tones the skin.
The Aloe & Rose Hydrating Toner is a soothing blend of Aloe Vera, Rose Water, Witch Hazel, fruit extracts (mango, rosehip, strawberry) and infused with precious, therapeutic grade essential oils (Clary Sage, Lavender, Ylang Ylang) that will leave your face perfectly cleansed, toned, refreshed and hydrated. It is very gentle, making it ideal for dry, sensitive or aging skin.
