Is a Facial Toner a Waste of Money or a Must-Have? February 02, 2017 14:31

Hope this year is off to a great start for you. Can you believe February is already here?! Time is really flying.

In my previous blog post, I had promised to return with more information about the function of a face toner in skin care. So here I am today hoping you’ll learn something new that will help you achieve or maintain that glowing complexion we all dream about. Over the years, I had an on-again, off-again relationship with toners. I would get really excited about a particular toner, use it religiously for a while, and then somehow forget about it. Who has the time to do an extra step, especially when you are tired and all you want to do is jump into bed, right? So when I read an article a few years back stating that a toner is just an unnecessary step that you can very well do without, I didn’t question it, I just chose the easy way out and stopped buying toners altogether. Fast forward to 2016… In my quest to find the secret to a younger looking skin, I met many women with gorgeous, luminous skin, claiming that their secret was the use of a toner. This intrigued me and pushed me to dig deeper and find out more. Did I miss out on something great all these years? Did you? Read on to find the answer.

What is a facial toner?

A toner is a liquid solution infused with beneficial ingredients that is applied to the face after cleansing and before moisturizing, with the purpose of unclogging your pores, removing traces of makeup, cleansing residue and excess oil and, ultimately, as the name suggests, toning the skin.

Why use a toner?

I will let the experts do the introductory talk. When asked "what's the secret weapon to healthy skin?" Dr. Hadley King, a New York City board-certified dermatologist, had a simple answer: toner. She said that using a gentle, soothing toner to remove oil and traces of dirt and grime is the solution for unclogging your pores and clearing skin problems.

How will a facial toner benefit your skin?

1. It balances your skin’s pH.

This by itself is an excellent reason to start using a toner. Here’s the science behind it: our skin is protected by a layer of secretions such as sebum and sweat, layer known as the acid mantle. The skin is naturally acidic, normally with a pH balance between 4.5 and 5.5. After cleansing your face, due to the alkaline nature of soaps, cleansers or even plain tap water which has a pH ranging from 6.5 to 8.5, the skin’s pH increases and its balance gets disturbed. When this happens, your skin can become dehydrated, irritated, and, since bacteria thrive in an alkaline environment, susceptible to infections and a variety of skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis. Using a gentle toner after cleansing helps to restore this balance quickly.

2. It shrinks pores.

Applying a small amount of toner to a soft cotton pad and gently blotting and wiping your face with it will remove oil, dirt, and give the appearance of smaller pores.

3. It adds a layer of protection.

A facial toner can help close pores and tighten cell gaps after cleansing, thus reducing the penetration of impurities and environmental contaminants into the skin. It can even protect and remove chlorine and minerals present in tap water.

4. It moisturizes.

Most toners contain humectants, such as glycerin, which means that they help to bind moisture to the skin.

5. It helps with breakouts and blemishes.

By removing the dirt and makeup trapped inside the pores during the day, toners help keep pores clear and prevent blackheads and minor pimples from forming. For super oily skin types, toners and astringents can help keep the skin from feeling too greasy.

6. It removes traces of makeup.

A toner removes all traces of makeup and cleanses residue and excess oil, leaving your face refreshingly cleaned and toned. You’d be surprised to see how much dirt and makeup remains on the cotton pad, even after you cleansed your face.

7. It sets makeup.

A toner used prior to applying your makeup might help it stay on longer. You can also put the toner into a bottle with a fine spritzer and spray it on your face to set your makeup and keep your face hydrated throughout the day.

How to use a toner?

After cleansing, moisten a cotton pad with toner and gently wipe your face, neck and décolleté area, using upward movements.

The conclusion of my research:

A toner is an absolute must-have in our skin care routine. I have been missing out on a great thing for many years, but at least I can do something about it now. As you can imagine, I didn't run to the first shop to buy a toner - who needs the parabens and toxic chemicals?! Instead, I continued my research and created my own toner with 100% natural, vegan, gluten-free and GMO-free ingredients. I've been using this blend for close to a year now and my skin has never been more luminous. If to my own experience I add the great feedback I received from the women who have tried my toner, I wholeheartedly recommend it to you.

Introducing Sheer Blends Hydrating Toner

Sheer Blends 100% natural, vegan & gluten-free hydrating toner

The first pH balanced toner I have lovingly created is specifically formulated for dry, sensitive or aging skin and is filled to the brim with exquisite natural ingredients that provide antifungal, antiseptic and restorative qualities for your skin. The floral waters used in this toner contain plant acids that give it a slightly acid pH, which will benefit the skin's acid mantle. Flower waters are also mildly astringent, making your pores smaller and fighting blemishes and breakouts.

Rose water also has natural antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

Witch Hazel water (alcohol-free):

Witch Hazel may be one of the most beneficial plants for skin. Its strong antioxidant and astringent properties are perfect for killing bacteria that lives within skin’s pores, stopping cellular damage that can lead to aging and speeding up healing. It reduces skin blemishes, cleanses and conditions the skin, tones and tightens the pores, soothes irritation, and balances oil production. The fact that this water is free of alcohol makes it a great match for dry, sensitive and aging skin.

Glycerin is invaluable as a natural-source ingredient with emollient properties that can soften and soothe the skin. Because it is a humectant, it attracts moisture from the air and binds it to the skin.

Fruit extracts:

This mighty toner packs impressive antioxidant power due to the mango, rosehip and strawberry fruit extracts.

This toner is infused with precious, therapeutic grade essential oils such as Clary Sage, Lavender and Ylang Ylang, specifically selected for their skin-toning and anti-aging properties. Natural Preservative:

Like all products that contain water, if not preserved, this toner would become a paradise for bacteria, yeast, fungi and molds in a few days. However, these days we are lucky to have access to a couple of great natural preservatives. You can rest assured that no parabens or other toxic preservatives have touched the natural perfection of this blend.
